Definition

Pyramidal inversion is a spontaneous process in which the spatial arrangement of atoms at a trivalent (three-coordinate) nitrogen atom in an amine changes, resembling an umbrella flipping inside out. This process allows molecules like amines to invert their three-dimensional shape without breaking any bonds.
