Definition

In organic chemistry, formyl refers to a functional group with the structure R-CHO, where R can be hydrogen or an organic substituent, and CHO denotes a carbonyl group bonded to a hydrogen. It is characteristic of aldehydes, distinguishing them from ketones which have two organic groups attached to the carbonyl carbon.
