from class:

Anatomy and Physiology I

Definition

A secondary ossification center is the region in the epiphyses (ends) of long bones where bone tissue begins to form during fetal development and continues through adolescence. Unlike the primary ossification center in the diaphysis (shaft), these centers contribute to bone growth in length and commence after the primary centers are established.
