Definition

The endothelium is a thin layer of simple squamous epithelial cells that lines the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, as well as the heart's inner chambers. It serves as a barrier and regulator for substances entering and exiting the bloodstream and plays a key role in vascular function and blood pressure regulation.
