Apoptosis is a process of programmed cell death that occurs in multicellular organisms, where cells systematically dismantle themselves and are removed without releasing harmful substances into the surrounding area. It plays a crucial role in maintaining tissue health by eliminating old, unnecessary, or damaged cells.
