Roles and Responsibilities
Director of Photography's Core Functions
- Director of Photography (DP) leads the camera and lighting departments
- Collaborates closely with the director to translate script into visual storytelling
- Determines the overall visual style of the film including color palette, lighting design, and camera movements
- Makes technical decisions about camera equipment, lenses, and lighting gear
- Manages the camera team including camera operators, focus pullers, and grips
Creative and Technical Decision-Making
- Develops shot lists and storyboards in collaboration with the director
- Chooses appropriate camera angles and movements to enhance narrative and emotional impact
- Selects lighting techniques to create mood, atmosphere, and visual depth (high-key, low-key, chiaroscuro)
- Determines appropriate exposure settings, shutter speeds, and apertures for each shot
- Oversees color grading process to ensure consistency with the intended visual style
Team Leadership and Communication
- Directs and coordinates activities of the camera crew and lighting technicians
- Communicates technical requirements and creative vision to production designer and art department
- Collaborates with visual effects supervisor to plan and execute complex shots

Pre-production Responsibilities
