AP US Government
Unit 1 – Foundations of American Democracy
Topic 1.6
How does the power dynamic between individual states and federal government during the Articles of Confederation (1781-89) compare with that under the European Union today?
There are no similarities between these two political structures.
The EU is entirely sovereign while states had no sovereignty under Articles of Confederation.
In both cases, individual constituents hold significant legislative power while sharing some with a central authority.
All powers are centralized under EU, but were distributed among states under Articles of Confederation.
