from class:

Intro to Sociology

Definition

Emergent norm theory explains how new norms and behaviors develop spontaneously in crowds or social movements, often in response to a shared event or collective sentiment. It suggests that individuals look to each other for cues on how to act, leading to the establishment of new norms under uncertain or ambiguous circumstances.
