Cultural Convergence

from class:

AP Human Geography

Definition

Cultural convergence refers to the process by which different cultures become more similar or start to share common traits and practices. This can happen through various means such as globalization, technological advancements, and increased communication.

Case Studies

  1. The global spread of fast food chains like McDonald's has led to similar dietary patterns in diverse cultures.
  2. Bollywood's influence on Nigerian film industry (Nollywood), blending Indian and Nigerian storytelling styles.

Impact

Cultural convergence can homogenize urban landscapes with similar architecture, retail outlets, and public spaces. It affects migration by creating familiar environments for migrants but may also reduce the distinctiveness of local cultures. Economically, it can create new markets for goods but might undermine traditional industries.
